Relevant links versus high page rank
Success of any link building strategy largely depends on the number and quality of linking partners. Finding quality link partners is a very basic and important step and without a proper analysis of the potential link partners everything can go wrong.
In the ideal scenario you may find a link partner with the relevant theme and high page rank. But most of the time you have to choose one from the following sites.
Site with relevant theme but low page rank
Site with irrelevant content but high page rank
Relevant site with low page rank
Search engines are evolving and trying very hard to provide the most relevant search results to the users. Till date Google is the best search engine because it gives you with the most relevant results for your search.
Recently Google came up with the idea of local page rank. It measures the link popularity of a website in its community (relevant sites). Here is what Google have to say about local page rank.
“Google goes far beyond the number of times a term appears on page and examines all aspects of the page’s content (and the content of the page linking to it)” to determine if it’s a good match for your query.”
There are three reasons for linking to a relevant website even when it has low or zero page rank.
- Link from a relevant site bring the targeted traffic to your site.
- By linking in your own community (relevant sites) you get more visibility and recognition among the users.
- Search engines are getting smarter and smarter; there are chances that they would continue to give more value to relevant links than links from irrelevant sites.
Irrelevant site with high page rank
Page rank is not the only factor search engines consider for ranking a website. Other factors like content quality, outbound links, anchor text being used, link popularity also contribute in page rank. Back link from a high ranked website (even if it’s irrelevant) may or may not get you an increase in your page rank.
Getting linked from irrelevant sites is not a long run strategy and not recommended due to the following reasons.
- Getting a back link from a high ranked website is not easy and sometime you have to pay hundreds of dollars per month. Unfortunately you can’t guarantee an increase in page rank after getting linked from a high ranked website.
- You hardly get any traffic from irrelevant sites.
- Usually high ranked websites sell their advertising space that may result in a penalty from search engines or Google in particular.
- Getting linked from irrelevant websites is not natural and causes a red alert to search engines. That may result in penalty to your website as well.
